If you are entitled to Medicare, your eligibility will begin on the first day of your 65th birthday month. Your 7-month initial enrollment window will span from three months preceding your 65th birthday month through the three months after.

During this time period, you can enroll in Original Medicare Part A and Part B. You may also select a Medicare Advantage plan or Prescription Drug Plan. Alternatively, you can enroll in a Medicare Supplement or MediGap plan the month preceding your 65th birthday and have Guarantee Issue rights for the ensuing six-month period. We recommend that you contact your Social Security office to find out how much, if any, your premium will be to have both Medicare Part A and Part B.

Whether you’re turning 65 or are new to Medicare for disability or Lou Gehrig’s disease, we have the answers to your enrollment timing questions.

What Do I need to do?

If you are already receiving Social Security retirement benefits, you will most likely be automatically enrolled in Original Medicare Part A and Part B. Typically, under this scenario, beneficiaries are mailed their Original Medicare cards approximately three months before their 65th birthday month. By default, the Part B premium will be deducted from your Social Security check. If you are not planning to start receiving security retirement benefits, you can still contact Social Security to enroll in Medicare separately. Generally, beneficiaries can expect to receive a quarterly bill for their Part B premiums. Some low-income individuals might qualify for assistance with their Part B premium payments. For additional information on your eligibility, please contact your Social Security or Medicaid office.

While enrolling with a private Medicare insurance plan to supplement or enhance your Original Part A and Part B coverage has its advantages, it is not required. These plans can help with overall costs and must cover at least everything covered by Original Medicare. However, keeping Medicare in its original form is entirely up to you. Our licensed agents can guide you through this process.

Already Have A Policy?

Those who already have a Medicare Advantage or stand-alone Prescription Drug Plan can choose a new one during the following times each year: Medicare Advantage and Prescription Drug Plan Annual Election Period is Oct 15 – Dec 7 each year. Anyone on Medicare can enroll in a Medicare Advantage or prescription drug plan for the first time, or switch plans during this period. You can also drop your plan altogether and return to Original Medicare during this time. Medicare Supplements can be applied for at any month throughout the year, however, if you are on a Medicare Advantage plan, you will need to drop that coverage first. You will also have to wait for an eligible enrollment period to enroll on a Prescription Drug Plan.

What do I need to do?

To enroll in a private plan, you can contact a licensed and certified Medicare insurance agent at no additional cost to you. You can also contact Medicare or the insurance company of your choice if you wish to sign up directly. Most carriers offer an option to enroll online.

When will my coverage start?

It depends on your situation. If you are enrolling during your initial enrollment period, your coverage can begin on the first day of the month of your 65th birthday. If you have a qualifying event and are enrolling outside of the enrollment period, your new plan will be effective on the first day of the following month. During the Annual Election Period (October 15 – December 7th), your new plan election will begin on the 1st day of the new year.

Special enrollment periods

There are other enrollments available to individuals who have special circumstances, such as moving to a new area, leaving an employer group plan, living in or recently moved out of an institution, among others. Give us a call, and we can check if you qualify.

Medicare is a federal health insurance program designed for people age 65 and older, as well as certain younger individuals with disabilities or specific conditions. It’s made up of different parts that cover various types of care:

Part A – Hospital Insurance
Covers inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing facility care, hospice, and some home health care.

Part B – Medical Insurance
Covers doctor visits, outpatient care, preventive services, and medical supplies.

Part C – Medicare Advantage
All-in-one plans offered by private companies, which bundle Parts A and B—and often include extra benefits like dental, vision, and prescription drug coverage.

Part D – Prescription Drug Coverage
Helps pay for prescription medications, available as a standalone plan or built into a Medicare Advantage plan.

Medicare Supplement (Medigap)
Optional coverage that helps fill the “gaps” in Original Medicare—like copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles.

How Do I Enroll?

Talk to a licensed Medicare agent to get advice about plans in your area. Agents can determine your enrollment eligibility, as well as navigate through options available with your doctors, hospitals, and prescriptions in mind. They would also be able to discuss the ancillary products available such as dental, vision, and transportation. Once you have narrowed down the plan, they can assist you during the enrollment process. You will have access to their contact information. Agents are available to help with customer service and with plan comparison with other carriers. They will also be available to go through benefits for the upcoming year, as they might change and your best fit could be with another plan.
